Purpose

School counselors can increase lawmakers’ knowledge of their day-to-day activities and the ways that comprehensive school counseling programs help students achieve academic, personal/social, and career development goals. By spending time at schools in their respective districts, legislators will learn that school counselors play a key role in student achievement, dropout prevention, career/college readiness, and other critical issues.

Dates: Monday, October 5 – Friday, October 9, 2015

This week was selected so that school counselors will have time to invite legislators while they are in their home districts instead of Raleigh. If this is not a convenient week for your school or if there is a special event that you would like to share with legislators, you are welcome to host a Legislators in Schools event at another time.

How Does It Work?

A school counselor may contact a legislator with an invitation to visit her or his school. Visits can be anywhere from one to several hours in length and may include a variety of activities such as classroom interaction with students, tours of school facilities, and lunch or a reception. More than one legislator can be invited. The most important component is a conversation about your school counseling program and your work with students.

If school counselors in your county can implement a district-wide Legislators in Schools program, this would be extremely valuable. Several legislators can be invited to elementary, middle and high schools to see a broad range of activities and to understand the differences between school counseling programs at each level.

Who Should I Invite?

Participants can invite any of the lawmakers who are involved in K-12 education, including federal or state senators and representatives, members of state and local school boards, town or city council members, or county commissioners. NCSCA can help you identify lawmakers to invite.
